After decades of failed attempts by a string of Democratic presidents and a year of bitter partisan combat, President Obama signed legislation on March 23, 2010, to overhaul the nation’s health care system and guarantee access to medical insurance for tens of millions of Americans.

It was the largest single legislative achievement of his first two years in office, and the most controversial. Not a single Republican voted for the final version, and Republicans across the country campaigned on a promise to repeal the bill. After they took control of the House and expanded their ranks in the Senate in the November elections, action on health care was at the top of their agenda.

On Jan. 19, 2011, the House voted 245 to 189 in favor of repeal, in what both sides agreed was largely a symbolic act.

With the House expected to vote to defund last year’s health overhaul law and frequent battles in the Senate over repealing the law all together, things have been pretty ugly here in Washington.

But this week brought a small win for moms. A group of lawmakers are celebrating a decision by the Internal Revenue Service to allow women to deduct the cost of breast pumps and other breast-feeding supplies.

The policy change means that from now on, taxpayers will be able to get back the money shelled out for breast-feeding supplies, which can cost hundreds of dollars.

It’s not super easy (is anything dealing with the IRS easy?) But women in the know can now get reimbursed if they use money from their Health Savings Accounts or Flexible Spending Accounts. Or, they can deduct the costs from their income taxes — if they have other medical expenses that make up more than 7.5 percent of their income.

There were about 82 J Dawgs left over after their ward party, and Devin Wengert, a junior at BYU, and his five roommates managed to cram all of them in their fridge and freezer. And in a little more than a week, all of the J Dawgs were gone.

“Anything we could think of to cook, we put a J Dawg in it,” Wengert said.

Unfortunately, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans does not suggest eating large amounts of hot dogs, or large amounts of anything, for that matter.

The 2010 guidelines reported about one-third of American adults are obese, and almost 15 percent of American households struggle to find healthy choices on a budget.

First lady Michelle Obama took her 1-year-old campaign against childhood obesity to the South on Wednesday, munching on blueberries with youngsters at an elementary school and later taking her pep talk on healthy eating to parents.

The first lady visited the Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta, touting that public school’s efforts to improve student nutrition and fitness as she marked the first anniversary of her “Let’s Move!” campaign. She snacked on some blueberries with a second-grade class and checked out the school’s garden with first-graders.

“Have you ever seen a baby squirming, turning purple, pretty much dying from something that could have been prevented?”

The Orem mother has spent most of the last two weeks in the hospital with her newborn baby, who developed whooping cough a week before she was old enough to get the first vaccination against the disease. Multiple times a day, Harman watches as Sissarina’s heart rate drops and she fights to breathe as nurses fill the room and hook up oxygen tubes or a mask to help the baby breathe.

The new Mountainlands Community Health Center is a hop, skip and 1.5-mile jump from the old clinic site.

It’s now been at its new home on south State Street for almost two months, and the clinic is reveling in all of the extra space it has to treat people and the resources it has to offer.

Now it needs more people.

“We do have room in our schedules where we have not in the past, and we’re trying to fill those up with anybody as best as we can,” said executive director Todd Bailey.

It’s not that they’re not treating people already; the clinic, which is geared mostly toward people without health insurance, has about 12,000 patients annually. About 13 percent of the clients have insurance and about 76 percent are Hispanic.
